Michelle Goembel has fought her own battle with leukemia. Now she is waging a war against the disease for others. “Getting (leukemia) was the absolute worst thing that ever happened to me,'' Goembel said. “But it could have been so much worse. Almost every night I thank God for everything that he has given me, all the stuff that's out there that other people take for granted. Now I want to make a difference so that others can go on.''

Facts & Statistics
Leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. They are considered to be related cancers because they involve the uncontrolled growth of cells with similar functions and origins. The diseases result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body's production of healthy blood cells.

Vitamin May Prevent Memory Loss
A vitamin found in meat, fish and milk may help stave off memory loss in old age, a study has suggested. Older people with lower than average vitamin B12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded.
