Survivor Supports Cancer Screening
A cancer survivor is backing a campaign by Cancer Research UK to increase the uptake in life-saving cancer screening.  Joanie Spiegel, a 54-year-old nursing assistant, was diagnosed with cervical cancer several years ago and underwent a full hysterectomy.

Breast, Cervical Cancer Screening Cost Low
The median cost of providing screening for under-or uninsured, low-income women for breast cancer was $94 and $56 for cervical cancer, a U.S. study found. Many deaths from breast and cervical cancer would be avoidable through the increased use of mammography and Pap tests.

January has been named Cervical Health Awareness Month and the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) is focused on educating women about the importance of the Pap test as a screening tool for cervical cancer/HPV and about the vaccines that can further reduce the burden of this devastating disease.

Knowing Your Risks Can Stop the Sneak Thief of Sight Glaucoma is a stealthy illness; most people have no early symptoms and do not notice as their peripheral vision diminishes or blind spots occur. As a result, about half of the three million Americans with the disease are unaware of their condition. Remember—knowing your risk for the disease can save your sight. If untreated, glaucoma ultimately results in blindness.

Keeping sight of the holidays

Businessman's Christmas book for children helps raise money for glaucoma research. About 200 kindergartners and first-graders sat on the gym floor and listened to a story that connected some disparate threads: a cat, the holidays and combating eye disease. The students at Youth's Benefit Elementary School in Fallston assembled recently to hear Samuel Polakoff read a story told from a cat's point of view about two families who come together in the spirit of Christmas.

Maryland to Expand Insurance Evaluations
Consumers Will Get Report Cards on PPO Plans—Consumers in Maryland trying to puzzle through the myriad health-care options available to them will soon have one more tool to aid in making decisions. 
Beginning late next year, Maryland will become the first state to give consumers independent evaluations of Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) health plans offered by four of the state's largest health-care providers: Aetna, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, CIGNA and United Healthcare.

By using beeps and flashes, Jinsitec product can boost patients' compliance with drug-taking regimens. A new West Lafayette life-sciences company has found a simple but effective way to fight some of the world's most common and infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Jinsitec, based at Purdue University's Research Park, has designed two products that remind patients when to take their medication. Its founders, sisters Della and Yvette Jules, say getting patients to adhere to their medication schedules can be one of the       biggest -- and toughest -- factors in fighting diseases.
